I have recently learned 'dialogue journaling' through my doctorate program and wanted to share with you one conversation that the Lord and I had about I John 2-5. Dialogue Journaling is the practice of quieting yourself down, fixing your eyes on Jesus, asking him to show you something and then writing it down. It is writing down your prayers and capturing the flow of His answers. I have had many super cool adventures with the Lord since making this a daily practice in January. I plan to share some of the significant ones on this blog. My words are in regular type, the Lord's responses are italicized
By way of summary of these 4 chapters in I John 2-5:
are committed to obeying Christ and loving others with the love of God through
the Holy Spirit. Love cannot flow
through us if we are not connected to the Lord because God is love. We are the vessel that allows God’s love to
flow through us. As children of God, we
become a reflection of God, that is more and more like Him the more we are in
communion with Him. We are to grow in
our Christ-likeness by having victory over sin, loving others and having
confident assurance that we are forgiven by God.
The Lord wants us to know Him
enough to have the discernment to recognize false prophets or wrong teaching or
worldviews. We need to have a solid
understanding of Truth so we can know and rebuke lies. We can live our lives with more boldness in
Christ the more we have full assurance in the truth for which we believe. Abiding in Christ is the only way to have
this constant assurance.
Lord, please show me an illustration of what you want me to
understand about I John 2-5.
The Lord showed me electricity.
Things that are
plugged in to the electricity have the ability to perform as created and
designed. Those same things, unplugged
will lay dormant and are impotent to accomplish what they were created to do.
Then the Lord showed me an image of the flux capacitor from the “Back
to the Future” movies. This to me
represented and energy flow of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and me needing to
be connected to it. (It was cool too because after the journal
experience, I looked up the work flux and it means continuous flow! God is so cool!)
See the energy of the
‘flux capacitor’? You have the privilege
of being connected to the energy of the Trinity- God’s perfect will and
power. Stay plugged in!
Thank for this awesome image Lord. It’s very helpful. What more do you want me
to understand about this word picture?
The source of My power
is endless and always available. Learn
to stay plugged in to it all the time so you don’t miss a single blessing. The more energy you get from Me, the more you
will reflect Me to those I have given you to serve. You were created in My image to reflect My
image to the world. This is what you can
do when you are plugged in.
You stay plugged in by
keeping your eyes fixed on Me, keeping Me front of mind, including me in all
things at all times. When you pull away
from Me, you pull the plug and will disconnect from the power source. Just like an object that relies on
electricity to function, you are dead, impotent to your effectiveness. Don’t let this happen because it leaves you
vulnerable to the enemy and keeps you from accomplishing what I desire.
Seek Me to plug in at
all times. Your fruit will reveal
whether you are connected or disconnected.
I love it when you give me a helpful metaphor Lord,
You asked for one. See how that works?
Good point Lord. I’ll
If you want to know how to have these kinds of conversations with God, check out "4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice" by Mark and Patti Virkler.
Do you ever feel like you need a God GPS? You just want Him to tell you which way to go? God offers this kind of direction if you pay attention. Let's look at Isaiah 30:21 today. We will break it down and then practice praying the scripture back to God.
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying this is the way, walk in it." Isaiah 30:21
Right away we notice that we can turn to the left or the right, yet there is ONE correct way to go. God’s way. God's way is THE WAY. God has the way that is right for us and if we consult Him we will learn the right way.
But, even if we go the wrong way, God will keep recalculating us to the right way if we listen to him; just like your car’s GPS system will if you don’t listen to your turn by turn instructions. When you miss the instructions on your car's GPS, the redirection will always cost you something such as more time, or inconvenience, or frustration. You will eventually get to where you are going, but, it will take much longer if we try to figure it out without the map (God’s Word) and without God’s voice directing us.
There are lots of ways that God speaks to us. This verse refers to a voice in our ears. The Quiet Still Voice is the Voice of the Holy Spirit, your constant guide, comforter and friend that lives in the heart of every believer. The voice in your ear that says this is the way, walk in it. This is a voice that is your head that you KNOW is not your own thoughts.
By way of example, one day I was mad at God for leading me to a totally unqualified doctor for my Lyme’s disease. I had asked God to make sure my primary doctor would recommend the specialist that God wanted me to see. The specialist referred doctor knew nothing about my condition and was condescending and rude. He even told me that Lyme’s disease was a myth and that my tick bite history, expensive diagnosis and list of symptoms were all in my head.
I left the office so angry and was venting to God asking Him Why He would send me to the most ridiculous and unqualified doctor in the entire area… when I heard a LOUD voice in my spirit that said; "I AM THE GREAT PHYSICIAN"! My complaining mouth was shut instantly and I KNEW that God was planning to heal me miraculously. AND, of course, HE DID! That whole amazing story is in my Clips that Move Mountains book.
Sometimes God’s voice is not so obvious. The way to be sure that you are hearing God’s voice and not just your own thoughts is to test the words against scripture. Does this message line up with the character and Word of God or is it contradictory? You can pray to hear Him more clearly and He will gladly answer that prayer as the Word of God instructs us to ask for wisdom and guidance from the Lord in all circumstances.
Next let’s look at the word WALK. To walk means to GET UP and GO. To move forward. It is an action word. Sometimes God makes his direction clear but we are still afraid to walk it out. You may KNOW what God wants you to do, but like Jonah, you run the other way. Know this; GOD'S WAY for you is the safest, best direction for you because it is smack in the middle of God’s will for your life.
So. even if it’s scary, Get Up and WALK in that direction. I knew for 6 months that God wanted me to leave a job and go into private consulting practice. But, I was afraid. I had a cushy job and I was very content in it. I finally listened because the messages were so clear and so compelling I was restless and uncomfortable if I didn't go God’s way. He blessed the eventual obedience and HE will with you as well. So, WALK in the Way that God leads. Walking is taking 1 step at a time. Putting one foot in front of the other. Try not to get overwhelmed by the entire journey, just focus on one step, one day at a time.
Let’s practice praying this scripture… Heavenly Father, Thank you that you bend down and whisper in my ears which way you want me to go. And that you gently redirect me when I go the wrong way. Lord thank you that your one way is the best way for me and I earnestly seek to hear your voice and follow you on that path. Your will for me is perfect, and your way is THE way for me. Give me the courage to walk in the direction that you call me one step and one day at a time. Thank you for being my Shepherd Lord. In Jesus Name, AMEN.
Now you try praying this scripture for your own circumstance. Just take the scripture and rephrase it for your own need. God will meet you there!
Are you waiting for God to answer a prayer that you know is part of His plan for you? Maybe like me you know that God has given you a glimpse of His plan for you, or even a few steps of the way in a specific direction and now you are waiting for the next step, or for his provision to take the next step. You don’t want to get ahead of God or take a wrong turn, and you want to trust Him in the silence but don’t really know how.
There are two major things in my life right now that have me in this exact place. God found us the perfect house when we weren't even looking for it. Now we need to sell our house and we are waiting for the multi-generational family that He has ordained to move to our in-law suite house to reveal themselves. The other is a Bible study retreat that God supernaturally directed me to take a leap of faith to schedule and I’m waiting for the God ordained participants to identify themselves with a short timeline. God knows our need and the needs of the people that would be connected to answering prayers and He is working behind our backs to answer them in His perfect timing.
What do you do when you need to have patience and trust that God knows what He is doing? Go to the Word. Here are some scriptures that helped my strength to rise as I wait upon the Lord to answer my prayers. As you read through these, look for the absolute promises that they assure. Look for words and phrases like: always, everyone, will be, will receive, promised, assurance, anyone, all, you will, etc.
Matthew 7:7-11 (NLT)
7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him?
Hebrews 10:36 (NLT)
36 Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.
Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)
11 Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.
Hebrews 11:6 (NLT)
6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
2 Peter 1:3 (NLT)
3 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.
Isaiah 64:4 (NLT)
4 For since the world began,
no ear has heard
and no eye has seen a God like you,
who works for those who wait for him!
Psalm 38:15 (NIV)
15 Lord, I wait for you;
you will answer, Lord my God.
I hope these verses helped you like they helped me. Did the promises of God jump off the page for you? The Word of God is clear. Keep on praying and the mighty and powerful God will answer. I can’t wait to see how and who He will bring into my life to answer my prayers.

Do you believe God for miracles in your life? Not all miracles are as big as the one pictured here when a young and disabled Forrest Gump sheds his braces and runs from chasing bullies.
If you want to see more miracles in your life, let's look at some basic principles that will help you see them.
Faithful prayer often precedes miracles. If you believe God for his promises, pray that God will show you a miracle, believe that HE will and HE WILL. James 1:6
"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind."
Praying God's word back to him is one way to pray with authority. Pray scripture back to God. In this way you are reminding God of his promise when you pray. Find a scripture that will reinforce your prayer and watch what happens. If you need healing, look for healing scriptures. Remind God that He is the Great Physician and Healer by your prayers. Remind him with scripture that he will fight battles for you.
Pray that God will open your eyes to see what He is up to. Many miracles happen that we take as coincidences instead of giving God credit for them. There are no coincidences, only God-Incidences.
Be careful not to expect your miracle to look a certain way. God's ways are very different than ours, so watch to see what and how he intervenes in your life this week. You may be surprised!
Big or little when God intervenes it a miracle. Angus Buchan reminds us that the condition of a miracle is difficulty, but the condition of a great miracle is impossibility. When something that we think is unlikely or impossible happens, you better believe God was involved!
God LOVES when we ask for miracles because it gives him an opportunity to show you and others that he is alive, mighty powerful and loving. So, there is no small prayer request. You are not bothering God with these requests. God stands ready for people to ask Him to help. Matthew 7:7 says 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
Pray for a miracle this week and share how God responds in the comment section here!
Quite spontaneously, after hearing of a similar prayer challenge that occurred in a suburban town near Cleveland, I threw out the prospect of a 28 day prayer challenge on the internet. Each day for the month of February, a group would pray on the phone for 30 minutes for each other and the projects and burdens God had laid on our hearts. I posted it on about 15 Christian Linkedin groups and folks from one of the groups responded.
Three of us showed up on the first day. A three stranded cord. “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NLT). There were 7 faithful prayer warriors in the group and on average, 4 or 5 would make it daily.
We prayed for impact and the resources of heaven to rain down on us. We prayed for encouragement when we didn't understand what God was up to. We praised God for who HE is and for the awesome honor it is to have been given a cool God project to lead. We prayed for the lost, for strategy, for hope, for healing and for truth in this generation. We prayed for God’s protection and provision and for our families and life circumstances. We prayed for God’s will to be done.
God knit us together in that 28 days. I found myself praying for them all day long. Some days God would wake me up in the middle of the night to pray for one member of the team or the whole group. During the course of the month, God encouraged us with movement closer to HIM and progress on our God projects. God put people in our paths, funds, favor and blessings. They were like kisses from Jesus.
When I heard this song today, I had to write this blog article. We became sheltering trees for each other. God gives us assignments, but he never intends for us to work them alone. There is power in prayer that can’t be explained.
The key lyrics to the song are below:
“We all need sheltering trees
Friends in our lives who'll get down on their knees
And lift us up before the king of kings
We all need sheltering trees”
I’m happy that we have agreed to pray once a week from now on and that we will be there for each other beyond the month of February. And oddly enough, I still find myself praying for each one of them every day. I would encourage you to take on a similar prayer challenge. You will be blessed by it!
In this clip from Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Sir Walter Raleigh has the Queen at the edge of her seat as he shares the experience of finding the New World after a long sea voyage. As you watch this film clip, consider that the land on the horizon for which he is describing as your promised land. That is; the plan and reward that God has uniquely set before for you.
Can you feel the excitement from the Queen as she imagines what the explorer is describing? The hope, the newness, and even the scariness of the adventure is all so captivating. Such is the plan that God has for every believer. It is your new world.
The term "promised land" is used more than 300 times in the Bible referencing promises of God’s great inheritance. The "promised land" included three things; God’s Presence, Property and People. In the days of the Old Testament, the focus of the inheritance was external riches. While in the post resurrection of Jesus times, the focus is on internal riches through the Holy Spirit.
In both cases, there will be:
• The Presence of God: Joshua 1:9 New International Version (NIV) 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
• Property: For example, in the Old Testament days, the Property was physical land that the Israelites were promised after God rescued them from Egypt. And after Jesus’ resurrection, the focus of "promised land" shifts to more internal riches. Since the Holy Spirit dwells within each believer, we now have the power to live the abundant Christian life of victory. This is described as the “Fruit of the Spirit” Galatians 5:22-23”But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” In all cases, satisfaction comes with productivity. Land can't bear fruit without hard work and people can't bear fruit without hard work. So, this side of the cross, our promised land is our Christian impact.
• People: Genesis 2: 18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” God wants us to live in families and communities. He wants us to work side by side with others and he knits together all of us in one BIG plan. God has a team in mind to help us accomplish his plan for us.
If we want to reach our promised land today, we must live out the big and unique plan God has promised for each of us with the power of the Holy Spirit. Our heavenly inheritance is based upon it. What happens here on earth will affect your final resting place in heaven.
If you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior you will live in heaven forever. This is a free gift. You are saved by faith and not by works. Your heavenly rewards, however, are earned by living a life of obedience and following the plans that God has for you. If you live a life purposed to serve God and do his will, then you will have much better accommodations when you get to heaven. If you accept Christ and live your own way, don’t follow His perfect plan for you and keep your Savior a best kept secret, your rewards will be much less than if you had followed his plans. Maximus said this best in the movie Gladiator “What we do in life echoes in eternity.”
Are you living the life that God has planned for you? Can you see your promised land on the horizon?
Have you ever felt like there has to be something more? Like there’s something you could or should be doing with your life that’s bigger or better and you don’t know what it is? When asked a question about identity, Billy Graham said that there were three ways to answer that question: There is the person you think you are; the person other people think you are; and the person that God knows you are wants to help you become. The secret of something more is to be person three.
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if you could live the life of God’s perfect and pleasing plans for you; the life of something more? To know the reward and satisfaction of living your calling and leaving an impactful legacy. But how do you do that?
Clips that Move Mountains is a guide to that journey. It is a God inspired, Scripture-rich road map that uses 23 film clips, true stories and real 21st century miracles as illustrations to guide you as you answer life’s toughest questions like:
• Is it logical to follow Jesus?
• What is my purpose and calling?
• How can I find forgiveness?
• How can I live my faith in today’s culture?
• How can I hear God’s voice?
• Who does God want me to be?
• What does God want me to do?
• How can I pray with confidence and authority?
I believe God wanted this book written because even though 79% of American’s identify themselves as Christians, according to a Barna Research Institute study, 72 % of publicly professing Christians could not pass the quiz on the Biblical worldview. People don’t know the true Jesus of the Bible and they don’t know how to access the full power and promises God has included in its pages. God wanted an interactive book that would show people how to find these answers with a personal relationship with Jesus. He’s a creative God and He knew that if a picture is worth a thousand words, a thought provoking or inspiring film clip can be worth a million words. The film clips leave and indelible mark and reinforce the messages that God has for them from the Bible.
I have been an Organization Development consultant facilitating movement for individuals and organizations toward their visionary goals for 30 years. In keeping with my style, it is written as a facilitation, with life application journal sections and exercises. It truly moves the reader forward in their journey.
There are 116 minutes of film and 454 Bible verses peppered throughout the book. On average, the films are from 1-5 minutes long. Films stream from outside clip hosting service or filmmaker’s websites. Many of the short film clips are from popular movies like Facing the Giants, The Lorax and Surf’s Up, or from fantastic Christian films that most people have not yet seen like October Baby and Uncondtional. Others are mini-movies that were created as sermon illustrations for pastors to use in the pulpit. People will remember the messages of these films along with the personal stories of ordinary people who have found their callings, overcome extreme challenges and are living with tremendous impact. My personal stories of my own love story with God and miraculous healing are also included in the book.
I’m so happy that people are growing their faith and finding a personal relationship with God through this book. One person shared that she was healed of a long illness after reading the account of a double miracle healing and praying for God to heal her. God met her in that moment and answered her prayer on the spot. Says one reader: “The book is going to challenge you on what you believe and how you live it out. This book is inspirational and practical. It really helped me cement the way I make my decisions, not based on what the world says but what scripture tells us. I know that you will not be disappointed in reading this book. For every person, whether a believer in Christ or not... there is plenty of wisdom to gain through the inspirational stories and movie clips that are so neatly woven together. Well done Patty!" ~Pete Formica
Even the regrets and tough times in your life can be used to help and uplift people. In this clip from the movie Rudy, Rudy gets discouraged and quits the Notre Dame Football team. Fortune, his boss, tells Rudy his own story of regret and spares Rudy from making the same mistake.
Who knows why God allows disappointments and challenges into our lives, but the Word says in Romans 8: 28 "And we know that God causes everything to work together[a
]for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Everyone has a story that can help someone. Life is full of challenges, disappointments and even tragedy. If "everything happens for a reason" and you are wondering what that reason may be for your life challenges, it may be to impact someone’s life with your story.
Keeping your hard times tucked away like skeletons in a closet doesn't help anyone; including you.
Life is messy and not a single human being on this planet is perfect. Have you had to overcome something difficult, challenging or tragic? If your answer is yes, then be willing to use your experience to help others. You will be blessed for it! Be open to opportunities to go out there and help someone else that is struggling with the same thing that you found victory overcoming. Tell them that they are not alone. Tell them what you did to get past it.
Tell them that they can do it too with the love of Christ. That’s how you leverage your story.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”~ Jeremiah 29:11
This is one of the most well known and beloved scriptures in the Bible. It was one of the first scriptures that I held on to, memorized and turned to for encouragement. God has promised a unique plan for every single believer and that plan is designed to give us hope and a prosperous future. Are you living the plan God has for you? Do you know how?
According to a Barna Research Group study, 79% of Americans identify themselves as Christian, but 72% of them don’t know what that means. They don’t know how to live the abundant Christian life partly because they have not spent enough time with Jesus in prayer or with his Word. They don’t know who they are in Christ enough to claim the promises of God in their lives and have the faith to live the abundant Christian life of victory and impact. They don’t know how to hear God’s voice and surrender to his much better plans for their lives.
God called me to write Clips that Move Mountains and the Kingdom Impact blog to help people remedy that. Clips that Move Mountains is not a book you read as much as one you experience. It uses true stories, real miracles and film clips as inspirational jump offs to help answer some of life’s toughest questions such as:
• Is it logical to follow Jesus?
• How do I grow my relationship and intimacy with Christ?
• How can I find forgiveness and overcome life’s challenges?
• How can I hear God’s voice?
• How can I live my faith in today’s culture?
• How do I shine the light of Christ to people who really need Him?
The Kingdom Impact blog is an extension of the Clips that Move Mountains idea. Each blog article will jump off of a video clip that illustrates a scripture verse. We’ll dive into the spiritual nuggets in the scripture and a film clip and challenge you to make it personal with a life application question.
God wants to use this Kingdom Impact Blog and the Clips that Move Mountains book to draw you closer to Jesus. It’s practical Biblical guidance that will help you live out the plans God has for you. A permission's draft of the book is in the hands of the film companies seeking their approval for including their clips in the book. Please agree with me in prayer for a "Yes" and "Amen" for all 23 film clips for the book. God inspired me to write about them so I know that HE wants them included in the book. Both the enhanced e-book and QR code paperback versions of Clips that Move Mountains will be available for sale to the public in November, of 2013. God has big plans for you; plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Let’s learn more about them and begin to walk them out together!
Angus Buchan is no stranger to miracles. Miracles have surrounded him since his spiritual rebirth in 1979. He was a hotheaded white African during a time when racial tensions were heightened by the pressures of farm life and drought in a poor South African region. Faced with ever mounting challenges, hardships and personal turmoil, Angus quickly spiraled down into a life consumed by anger, fear and destruction.
It was not until he heard the honest testimony of a man who seemed just like him who had found peace and joy in Jesus Christ that Angus gave his life to Christ. Immediately, he had an unquenchable hunger and thirst to know God and spent many hours reading the Word and praying. Learning about this Jesus, his Savior,Redeemer and Friend was a consuming passion.
Angus believed God. He didn’t just believe IN God. He believed God. For every promise he read about in the Bible,he trusted God to be who HE said HE was. “I had a choice: I could believe the lies of the devil, in which case I was on my way to suicide, or I could believe in the promises of God, and be taken through my time of trial.”
~ AngusB uchan, Faith Like Potatoes: The Story of a Farmer Who Risked Everything for God
One of the first miracles Angus experienced as a new believer in Christ is depicted in this clip from the film Faith Like Potatoes, about the true story of the life of Angus Buchan. It was when he prayed for rain during a severe drought to stop a fire that threatened to take his farm.
Angus began quoting the Scripture promise out loud to God found in Matthew and Mark.
“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” ~Matthew 21:22 and reinforced again in Mark 11:24“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Then he began to pray for rain.
“There is power in prayer. When men work, they work. But when men pray, God works.”~ Angus Buchan.
Potatoes need a lot of water to grow. It doesn’t make sense to plant them in the dust of a drought dried land. People thought that Angus was crazy for wanting to plant them. When he was questioned about this decision he answered: “The condition for a miracle is difficulty, however the condition for a great miracle is not difficulty, but impossibility.” He believed God for this miracle and God loves to answer bold faithful prayers.
Potatoes are a wonderful metaphor for faith because they grow underground. When you can’t see the progress toward your goal, when the progress is hidden from your view, you still have to trust God. Angus planted those potatoes in the dust and it didn’t rain much during that drought season. There was no logical reason to believe that potatoes would grow in that four month drought. But on harvest day, there was a bumper crop of potatoes the size of double fists! God is glorified when we believe him for great miracles. He delights in showing up to answer bold prayers!
What bold prayer can you pray and believe God for today?
