Guiding Light in the Darkness

In this Clip from Apollo 13, with the fate of astronaut Jim Lovell and his crew in jeopardy, Lovell’s family and friends watch an old television interview where he talks about the faith of finding a way home.

"God is our refuge and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come
and the mountains crumble into the sea." ~ Psalm 46:1-2

Life is full of challenges, unexpected turns, and unwanted circumstances that can prove difficult to handle. Sometimes it looks like there is no solution to our problems.   Too often, we try to solve our problem ourselves through our own abilities or resources.

When those attempts fail, however, how do we respond?

Sometimes God allows us to exhaust all of our resources and conventional wisdom, before providing a solution or way of escape.  Sometimes we are quick to trust and lean on what we know and see, whereas God leads us towards what is unknown and unseen, so that we may learn to trust in Him. It is part of the process He calls faith.

Just like when the Israelites were standing on the bank of the Red Sea, the scriptures are full of examples in which God leads people into seemingly impossible situations with no means of escape. God humbles us in cases like that by showing us how completely dependent on Him we need to be and then He demonstrates His great love for us. It's only after we reach a dead-end and are powerless to change our circumstances that we can truly appreciate His hand of deliverance.  Otherwise, we may take credit for the solution ourselves and forget who was really in sovereign control.

In other cases it's not a matter of God testing our faith but rather Him saving us from ourselves.   Sometimes, our own solutions can cause consequential problems that we can’t see.  Trying to find our own way can blind us to His purpose and provision. If our plans are not working out, it could be that God has a better one prepared for us, and in His mercy, He is thwarting our efforts. Its only when Jim's cockpit lights failed, for example, that he was able to observe the algae trail showing him the way home.

God has your best interest in mind at all times.  Trust Him to guide you in all circumstances.  "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." ~ Psalm 119:105
